- Today..myself and two friends from the are went fishing….out on the Long Island Sound. It was a beautiful day..around 70 degrees, sunny, and the fish were there. We went looking for Blackfish…officially called “Tautog”….an Indian word which should mean..” very difficult to catch”…………..These ugly fish which typically weigh about 3-5 LBS, lie very deep in the water, around reefs or rock…so you have to let the bait, which we used green crabs, go down to the bottom, and allow these stupid little creatures to bite on, and then you quickly tug on the line, as to hook him, and then bring it up to the boat. Now..keep in mind..I have no idea what the hell I’m doing…but one friend, who owns the boat, and the gear, and the beer, and the gasoline, and the pier from which to go out on, and has everything to do with how I even knew how to do anything….is a very patient guy. He teaches me and the other guy…who just happens to be Portuguese…so he already has an advantage over me in catching these things….Anyway…it was fun for the most part, but I have to admit…fishing is one nasty sport….from dissecting these filthy little crabs, which smell like a bad fungus, to grabbing these fish, which smell terrible and feel even worse, to later on watching my friend…Jim skin these bastards-gut them, and fillet them. Absolutely disgusting…to watch him do this, made me feel like I was watching a horror flick. The way they cut these things up, and throw them in a bloody bucket of salt water, and finally put the fillets in a couple of plastic bags to take home…I don’t know…it looks so much nicer when getting a Chilean Sea Bass on your plate at a very fine restaurant….
